A fault with a portable fan in a resident’s bedroom sparked an emergency at the Leighton House rest home in Cheeseman Road in Kaiti last night when the fan caught fire.
Fire and Emergency NZ sent two appliances to the complex just on midnight.
“Fumes and smoke from melting plastic
in the fan set off smoke alarms,” a senior firefighter said.
“The resident in the room where the fan was, and residents in other rooms in the wing, were evacuated while the problem was dealt with.
“No one was injured or affected by the fumes.”
