Travellers were urged to take extra care with heavy rain expected to cross the district last night.

Those heading north through the Waioeka Gorge and Bay of Plenty have also been advised of a bridge closure which may require them to make a detour.

New Zealand Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi says State Highway 2 from Taneatua to Awakeri will be closed from Monday to Thursday, and possibly Friday, for repairs to the Peketahi Bridge.

The highway will be closed from 8.30am to 4.50pm each day.

The detour available for north-bound traffic is to carry on into Whakatane, cross the Whakatane River bridge and carry on to the SH2 and SH30 intersection at Awakeri.
