AN extension of the period during which objections and appeals to Gisborne District Council’s final representation proposal for the next local body elections has been announced.

Submissions and objections were to close at 4pm yesterday but the period has been extended to July 2.

By close of business yesterday, there had been 29 objections or appeals.

The council says that given the significant weather events that have affected the community and the number of requests for an extension of time, it will now be allowing late appeals or objections up to next Monday at 4pm.

When the appeals and objections period does close, they will be forwarded to the Local Government Commission, which will make the final decision for the 2019 local body elections.

It has been opposed by some of the council’s rural councillors and last week Gisborne-Wairoa Federated Farmers provincial president Sandra Faulkner urged farmers to speak up against the proposal.
