GISBORNE-based Eastland Group is looking for talented students to apply for its annual scholarships.

Every year, Eastland Group awards one or more scholarships to outstanding students from the region who are studying civil, mechanical, electrical or chemical and process engineering.

The scholarship is worth $5,000, and comes with the possibility of paid holiday work with the company.

“2018 is shaping up to be another big year for Eastland Group,” Eastland Group chief executive Matt Todd said.

“Our new Te Ahi O Maui geothermal plant near Kawerau will be completed and fully operational, while the port continues with plans for a multimillion dollar, five year twin berth project.

“Our people make our ongoing growth possible, and we employ a number of engineers across our business sectors.

Providing scholarships to local engineering students is one of the ways in which we support our community and the young stars of the future.”

In 2017 the calibre was so exceptional, four students received scholarships.

Former scholarship winner Sam Goodwin, who recently completed his civil engineering degree, urged others to put their names forward.

“The Eastland Group tertiary scholarship has not only provided me with financial aid, but it has opened many other doors throughout my degree.

“It’s allowed me to gain work experience at Eastland Port, spend more time focusing on my grades, and take sporting opportunities I otherwise may not have had the ability to take.

“I’ve received over four years of support from Eastland Group and I am grateful for the opportunities the scholarship has provided me. I strongly encourage anyone looking at studying engineering to apply. You have nothing to lose but so much to gain.”

Applications are open now.

This year, for the first time, students can apply online and include either a 750 word essay or a short video to support their submission.

To apply, go to eastlandcareers.nz and enter the reference code 3698681.

Applications must be received by 31 October 2017, and the successful recipients will be announced mid-December.
