East Coast MP Kiri Allan is backing the cheeky kea for the high-profile Bird of the Year title.

Online voting for the Forest and Bird of the Year/Te Manu Rongonui o Te Tau 2021 started on Monday.

The Labour MP declared her support for the highly intelligent parrot in Parliament this week during question time.

“I threw my support for Bird of the Year 2021 behind the charismatic, cheeky and simply stunning kea,” she said on her Facebook page.

“Aotearoa, the kea is a unique taonga, and the only alpine parrot in the world! It's numbers between only 3000 and 7000 in the world. Will you support the Kea for your #BoTY Bird of the Year.

“Check out www.birdoftheyear.org.nz to rank our native birds but vote for the kea,” she said.

Voting closes on October 31.

The kakapo, a nocturnal, flightless parrot won Bid of the Year in 2020.

Meanwhile, Ms Allan has commemorated the first anniversary of Labour's re-election when the first-term list MP won the East Coast electorate.

She recalls being extremely nervous on election night.

“It was an evening I'll never forget — the day I became the Member of Parliament for the mighty East Coast.”

She also spoke of her recent battle with cervical cancer.

“Every single day I feel incredibly blessed to have this job.

“It's been a bit of a rubbish year if I'm frank. Getting crook kicked the wind out of my sails for a bit so I'm running hard now to catch up on everything that happened while I took time off.

“But I know I feel so incredibly privileged, every morning chucking on my boots to advocate as hard as I can for this place I love and call home.”
