A driver whose passenger died after the vehicle they were in collided with a firewood trailer in Ormond Road earlier this year, has admitted he was speeding dangerously when the crash occurred.

The vehicle driven by Norton Turei Hunia, 25, smashed into a stationary trailer full of firewood just west of the Wi Pere Street roundabout on March 11.

Hunia’s passenger Te Rito Takekerekere Brown, a 29-year-old father of five from Wairoa, died in Waikato Hospital a few days later.

Hunia accepted a sentence indication yesterday in Gisborne District Court and pleaded guilty to three charges arising out of the crash — driving at a dangerous speed causing death, refusing to allow a blood specimen to be taken, and driving while disqualified for a third or subsequent time.

He was further remanded in custody for sentence on December 4.
