Gisborne senior doctors, like their colleagues around the country, took their case for better pay and working conditions to the public yesterday.

A total of 5500 doctors and 100 dentists, employed by Te Whatu Ora, walked off the job for two hours, resulting in 250 operations being postponed or cancelled across New Zealand. It is the first time members of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) have gone on strike. More than 80 percent of ASMS members voted to take strike action.

“Te Whatu Ora will not even pay senior doctors and dentists the bare minimum to ensure their staff do not take a real-terms pay cut for the third year in a row,” ASMS executive director Sarah Dalton said.

Doctors will  strike again on  September 13 and 21. All three strikes will last two to four hours.
