The reopening of Mōrere Hot Springs has taken a big step forward, with major remedial infrastructure works now under way at the site.

A failing septic system forced the closure of the hot pools last summer, and effects from Cyclone Gabrielle delayed the process of securing contractors earlier this year.  However, procurement has advanced, and Enviro Water has now begun the project to fully replace the septic system.

Although no precise date can be given for reopening the pools, Department of Conservation Tairāwhiti operations manager Matt Tong said it won’t be long until whānau can return to the healing waters.

“We know the community is eagerly awaiting the reopening of the hot pools, and we’re glad to be making progress again after a difficult year in many ways,” Mr Tong said.

“We know it’s disappointing Mōrere won’t be open for the summer holidays, and we share this sentiment.

“We’re hopeful everyone will soon be enjoying this special place once again. At this stage we’re looking at April or May 2024 for reopening, but much of this relies on the supply chain and, of course, the weather playing ball for contractors on site.”

Alongside recent procurement processes, DoC and iwi representatives have collaborated to form the Mōrere Steering Roopu.

“We appreciate the importance of this taonga to mana whenua and we have all come together to partner in the planning for a thriving Mōrere for many years to come.

“Our first priority is to drive the steps to reopening and we acknowledge the continuous call from whānau to do this with urgency.”

Further updates on Mōrere Hot Pools reopening would be shared as work progressed, Mr Tong said.
