More than 100 entrants registered for the annual fishing competition run by Te Puka Hunting and Fishing Club in Tokomaru Bay last weekend.

Club president Rozzi Pethybridge said they were rapt  with such a good response.

When it came to any fishing competition, they prayed for good weather and sea conditions, said fishing club captain Mawhai Chaffey.

“Despite not having both on Saturday February 3, it turned out to be an absolute blast on the beach.

“Fishing by boat was cancelled due to high winds, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of  the participants who gathered for a day filled with fishing fun and camaraderie,” Mawhai said.

“The beach was buzzing with excitement as anglers from all over the Coast showcased their skills and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.

“It was a four seasons in one day kind of experience, but no one gave in.

“The sandcastle competition added an extra touch of creativity to the event and an opportunity for whānau to work together to win some big cash prizes.

“All in all, it was a fantastic turnout (considering the weather) and our committee would like to do a big shout-out to our major sponsors who continuously support this great event for our community.”

Rozzi Pethybridge said the club committee gave much of their time to the community as volunteers, and to have such strong local participation in the event last weekend was “fantastic”.

“We appreciate the businesses that support our events through sponsorship which enables us to provide fun and enjoyment for those living on the Coast and those who travel from other places to join us for our competitions.

“We now turn our attention to prepare for our annual Stag & Boar hunting competition.”
