The Beef + Lamb NZ-organised community get-together in Ūawa last week was another “fantastic event”,  well attended and supported by the Ūawa farmers and rural community impacted by Gabrielle.

It was held at Mangaheia Station at Tolaga Bay.

The butchery demonstration was a hit, with all attendees very engaged and “lots of the young shepherds and shepherdesses enjoying and participating in the demonstration”, said B+LNZ’s Pania King.

“The knife sharpening exercise was a real hit.

“The demonstration performed by Think Water Gisborne was well received and the people of the land learned a lot as they enjoyed the day,” she said.

“These are some of the practical skills needed to help you as a farmer.”

Mrs King said with the sun shining, the real fruit ice creams were a real treat for the children. The coffee and hot chocolates went down well too.

“Add the yummy barbecue meal and a good kōrero,  and everyone was in great sprits and appreciative of the effort made.”

Among the feedback  was the comment, “It was great to bring this opportunity to muster up our community for this well overdue check-in and get-together.”

And this one: “It reminded us that we are very lucky to be part of a great community and a great region.”

Tim Jefferd (farmer councillor) for Beef + Lamb NZ, thanked Pania for  her hard work through a tough year.

“We are looking forward to working together next year to support farmers in Tairāwhiti.”
