The Comet Swim Club will be well represented this weekend at the New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Association annual awards and conference in Christchurch where they are finalists in two categories.

Comet will be among three finalists in the Swim School of the Year for New Zealand and also in the Swim School of the Year - Innovation section.

A contingent of eight club members will be at both events in Christchurch this weekend.

“We’re thrilled to be finalists in these two categories,” said club manager Rochelle Somerton.

“We originally submitted for Swim School of the Year, but the association let us know they would also like to nominate us in the Innovation category as well.

“That category reflects how we push the boundaries and offer more diverse ways of learning to swim and survive. Comet strives to provide what our community needs,” Mrs Somerton said.

“For example we have Māmā and Pēpi classes for mums and their bubs, with instructors speaking both te reo and English.

“We offer migrant community classes at our 33 degree swim school base at Elgin Primary School.

“We’re also just about to launch free wahine classes, and we have spaces for about 50 women who would like to come and learn to swim with us,” she said.

“That’s the sort of innovation that has seen Comet become finalists for the awards.”

The Christchurch event involves a three day conference as well.

“There will be lots of learning

for us in Christchurch. The professional development will be excellent for our team that is travelling to Christchurch but also bringing it back to share with the

rest of our team who are holding the

fort.

“Making it to the final three in two categories is amazing. It is wonderful to get the recognition of being the successful club we are.”
