PEOPLE taking a stroll on Midway Beach next Sunday should avoid wearing their Sunday-best if they intend to take part in Gisborne’s second annual Holi Festival.
Organised by Tairawhiti Multicultural Council (TMC), the event celebrates the Hindu spring festival of Holi, also known as the festival of colours, where participantsplay, chase and colour each other with powder.
TMC president Vijendra Reddy said 15kg of powder had been ordered for the festival.
“We did it last year. There were about 100 people. We are expecting 200 this year.”
Mr Reddy said the celebration was a free community event.
“We provide everything so people just need to come along. Just make sure to come in white so you can be changed different colours.”
It runs from 11am to 2pm on Sunday on Midway Beach near the surf lifesaving club.
Live Bollywood-style dance performances will take place before people play with the coloured powder made from rice flour and is specifically for use outdoors.
