A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

I write this in response to an exchange of views with a contributor who claims to be a climate change believer.

The reality of the present climate crisis is undeniable — average global temperatures are increasing due to emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities.

Climate denial or climate disinformation can take other forms like challenging the integrity of climate scientists, arguing that environmentalists like myself are alarmists and “net zero is bad for the economy”. This hinders the ability of policymakers to apply meaningful climate action.

Tackling the global challenge of the climate crisis requires cooperation from a good majority. To make any headway, most folks need to be informed and engaged, with enough willingness to lobby the politicians who take the issue seriously enough.

We must have a shared understanding and sufficient common sense to trust the scientific findings, and also possess the motivation, and be aware of the urgency of the desperate need to protect our planet.
