GISBORNE police will hold an open day this month to showcase policing as a career and profile the wide variety of work police do in the Tairawhiti community.

The open day has been planned for Sunday, March 11, as part of a nationwide initiative.

Eastern District Commander, Superintendent Tania Kura said the day was intended to provide police and the community with the opportunity to connect in an informal setting.

“We have a number of activities planned across the Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay districts to showcase the different opportunities a career in the police can provide.

“Staff have been busy organising it and I encourage anyone curious about a career in the police to come along and learn about it firsthand.

“Eastern District police needs great people who care about their communities to join us.”

Activities include static and interactive displays from the Armed Offenders Squad, Search and Rescue, police dog teams, Scene of Crime officers and Community Patrol teams, said Senior Sergeant Lincoln Sycamore.

“We’ll have ‘junior detective’ activities for the young ones.”

“There will be a barbecue operated by Three Rivers Community Patrol and a tour of the Gisborne station, along with displays from road policing, a recruitment display and information.”

Superintendent Kura said while this year’s open day had a recruitment focus, there would be plenty of other activities.

“Anyone curious about a behind-the-scenes look at police and the work we do will be welcome.”
