One striped marlin was tagged and released, and 12 yellow tuna were caught yesterday, on the first day of Gisborne's biggest game fish contest.

Regan Hurring caught a 15.96kg yellow fin, and Paul Pardoe a yellow fin that weighed in at 16.835kg.

Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club president Roger Faber spoke from out on the water this morning — he was about 15 miles out from Pouawa, he said.

On day two of the Liquorland Marlin and Tuna Tournament, Mr Faber said it was nice out on the water this morning but the wind was forecast to pick up later this afternoon.

“It is great to see the yellow fin tuna being out and caught,” he said.

“All the boats from out of town have arrived, so the harbour is full of launches at night which is great to see.”

Mr Faber said the forecast for day three tomorrow was for the wind to get up to 12 knots, with wind on the final day on Sunday forecast to get up to 20 knots.

Anyone keen to view the catch of the day can do so between 3pm and 6pm tomorrow, Friday and Saturday and from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, at the fishing club.
