Emergency services were called to Gisborne’s Gladstone Rd-Bright St intersection mid-morning on Friday after a car left the road, mounted the kerb and hit a shop.

It hit and damaged the woodwork at the bottom of a window unit at the One NZ shop at the corner.

The crash happened about 10.15am.

The driver of the car was checked over at the scene by St John Ambulance officers and did not need to be transported to hospital.

It was described as “a fairly low-speed crash”.

“Not a nice thing to see in the city this morning,” said one passerby.

“Lucky no one on the footpath was clipped by the car as it went off the road,” another said.

Firefighters moved the damaged car away from the shop wall and the footpath to a safe place.
