Capital stock cows in the majority

Capital stock cows made up the majority of the yarding of 1100 head at the monthly Cattle fair at the Matawhero saleyards yesterday.

The best of those cows realised up to a top price of $1470 for a line from Waitangi Terraces.

Good useful cows made between $1200 and $1470.

The medium cows made between $800 and $980.

There were about 100 R2 steers yarded and the best of those, the good types, made up to $1860, selling from $1300 up to that top value. The medium R2 steers sold for between $1150 to $1250.

There were 150 R2 heifers yarded and the best of those made $1040, with the rest in the $920 to $1000 range.

Of the yearling steers yarded the best of those sold for $950.

“There was a pretty light bench of buyers yesterday, which is about what’s expected in July, and because of the impact of the wet weather,” said auctioneer Chris Hurlstone from PGG Wrightson.

“The back end of the sale was very hard work selling, and it was hard to find new homes for the lighter end of the yearlings.

“We look for better things at the August Cattle Fair.”
