Buyers a bit low on confidence

A yarding of 2400 head were presented at the weekly Matawhero sheep sale yesterday and they were mainly a good mix of store lambs and scanned-in-lamb ewes.

The best of the male store lambs sold for between $109 and $118, and they came from Waitangi Terrace Station at Kanakanaia and Tangihau Station at Rere.

In the ewe lambs section of the sale the best of the shorn ewe lambs went for between $97 and $101, and they came from Kotangi Station at Ngatapa and Tangihau.

There was a big line-up of woolly ewe lambs, from Waitangi Station, and they made up to $95.50.

A decent number of scanned-in-lamb ewes were yarded.

The best of them, mixed age, sold for up to $140, and up to $130 for six year scanned-in-lamb.

There were just a handful of prime sheep presented for sale, and the good butchers’ ewes made $80.

“We had a better week weather-wise, but then it turned bleak again to coincide with our sale day,” said PGG Wrightson auctioneer Chris Hurlstone.

“So selling conditions were not that comfortable, and the buyers present were a bit low on confidence.”
