Simon Bridges is pretty much a goner.

That’s the majority response from the latest Gisborne Herald webpoll, which asked voters if they thought the National Party leader would still hold his position by the 2020 General Election.

An overwhelming 81 percent, or 351 out of 435 voters, said Bridges would be out by then. Only 15 percent (66) of voters said he would remain. Four percent (18) said they were unsure.

National was in need of better leadership to stand a chance against Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, some voters said.

“Bridges’ only match to Ardern is age. He cannot match her in intelligence, integrity, charisma, popularity or heart. She is also a better strategist,” one respondent said.

“National needs a more charismatic and dynamic leader to have any chance of winning in 2020,” said another voter.

“He was never up to being leader in the first place. It illustrates what a useless bunch National have become,” said one respondent.

Another voter said while they admired Bridge’s stance on climate change, they felt he handled the Jami-Lee Ross affair badly.

Steven Joyce and Judith Collins were named as possible alternatives as National Party leaders.

“They should have backed Steven Joyce. At least he was a safer bet,” said one respondent.

“He will be lucky to see the week out. Could be replaced by Judith Collins,” another said.

Many voters thought the media had a lot to answer for.

“The media are relentless when it comes to leadership. I think they want him to fail.”

“Politics these days with social media are all about personalities not how good you are at your job.”

The current news around Bridges’ leadership has already deterred one traditional National voter.

“He should stand down now. I have always voted National but not any more.”

One unsure respondent said Bridges had not done himself any favours over the last several weeks.

Some of the respondents who thought Bridges would remain at the helm said he was a good leader, and they called the media out for sensationalism.

“He is responsible and has a great future as New Zealand’s Prime Minister,” said one voter.

“Overrated reporters and commentators vetting their Labour or National viewpoints. Another mountain made out of mole hill,” said another respondent.
