Fewer youngsters have been jumping off the William Pettie, Gladstone Road and railway bridges, after warning signs were put up. But some are still doing it, and the harbour master has spoken again about the danger of hidden debris. File picture

Youngsters continuing to jump from the railway bridge have been warned again by Gisborne District Council harbour master Peter Buell about the risks involved.

On recent warm days, small numbers have been seen taking the leap from the bridge into the Turanganui River.

“To those still jumping, our message is that there is debris under the bridges, making it very dangerous,” Mr Buell said.

Signs are up at the city’s three bridges to warn people of the underwater hazards and not to jump.

“The signs have lowered the number of young people jumping off the bridges, and we are glad most young people have heeded the warnings.

“We’d also like to thank the wider community who’ve also stepped in to warn anyone about to jump into the water from these bridges.”

Mr Buell said every time there’s heavy rain, woody debris comes down the Waimata River and gets stuck on the three bridges  —the William Pettie Bridge on Rutene Road, the Gladstone Road Bridge  and the Railway Bridge.

Two ladders were reinstated by the council after the revetment walls were made higher.

“The ladders provide a way out for paddlers, swimmers, boaties and anyone who finds themselves in the water,” he said.

“We certainly don’t want anyone trapped in one of our city rivers unable to get out.”

City Watch run by the Maori Wardens also patrols the area around the bridges, discouraging jumping.
