Inquiries are underway after a body washed up on Māhanga Beach, near Wairoa.

Tuai Senior Constable Tony Maultsaid said a member of the public called police after discovering the body yesterday at about 1pm.

“Specialist officers from Tairāwhiti attended and the formal identification process is ongoing,” he said.

Maultsaid said the work could take time due to the circumstances.

“A post-mortem will be carried out in the coming days, which will assist the inquiries being carried out by police.”

Maultsaid said more information would be released when available.
