Excitement is building as the region's black cattle stud bull breeders prepare to auction this year's crop of rising two-year-olds, sales that were worth more than $4 million to the regional economy last year.

The annual East Coast Angus R2 Bull Week sales start tomorrow with 30 on-farm at Ratanui Angus inland from Wairoa.

Around 380 young bulls go under the auctioneer's hammer this season.

Bull Week proper begins on Monday morning at Tangihau Angus at Rere, followed by a combined sale involving Orere, Waimata, Tawa Hills and Cricklewood studs at Matawhero in the afternoon, then Kaharua Angus in Goodwin Road later that afternoon.

Whangara and Turihaua Angus follow on-farm on Tuesday, and Turiroa at Wairoa and Kenhardt at Nuhaka wrap the season up on Wednesday.

Industry experts believe the scene has been set for another outstanding season locally in 2022.

The breed-high on-farm sales average at Gold Creek Simmentals at Te Karaka and the strong result at Wilencote Herefords at Ngatapa are signs of a good season for the Angus breed here.

Last season's Bull Week success was topped off with a New Zealand-high average and national on-farm record high price for Angus.

It was described as a “fantastic week for the local beef industry.”

PGG Wrightsons genetics representative Emma Pollitt, who has travelled and viewed many of the bulls on offer throughout the country, says buyers here could be assured the East Coast line-ups of 2022 “are as good as ever”.

“As always, the vendors have worked diligently at producing top teams of bulls, bred by design for our tough hill country.

“Buyers can bid with confidence that the future sires that will go under the hammer in this region will add value to their breeding programmes.”
