FIREFIGHTERS across the region had a quiet Guy Fawkes night, thanks to the weather.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand sent a crew to the beachfront along Centennial Marine Drive this morning to put out a bonfire left burning.
“That call was a nothing really and that was it in terms
of fireworks issues. We had no other calls last night,” a senior firefighter said.
Principal rural fire officer Ray Dever said there were no calls for rural firefighters, which he put down to the weather
“It was too wet for a lot of people to let off their crackers,” he said. “But with the clearing weather we would expect to see a lot more activity over the next few nights. We ask people to continue to be sensible about it.”
