The trailing suction hopper dredge Albatros has been working out in Turanganui-a-Kiwa/Poverty Bay and around the port since last Saturday.
The dredge has been removing the naturally accumulating sediment along the shipping channel, turning basin and Wharf 8. “The work is to ensure they are the correct depth for ships to transit and manoeuvre safely,” an Eastland Port spokesperson said.
“This is consented, routine work that we do annually.”
The Dutch-owned Albatros, stationed in New Zealand, undertakes regular maintenance dredging at ports throughout the country, including Napier, Tauranga, Taranaki, Lyttleton, and Timaru.
It is expected the vessel will be in Gisborne for about three weeks.
