More than 14,000 people will fly into Gisborne over summer, Air New Zealand estimates.

Today is the airline’s busiest day of the year, with nearly 50,000 people taking off to destinations across Aotearoa and overseas.

Air NZ is also reporting strong demand for travel to Gisborne.

Regional affairs manager Jason Dawson said the airline was looking forward to connecting travellers with Tairāwhiti, through Gisborne Airport.

“Festival-goers, active adventurers, beach and chardonnay lovers are going to be packing into Gizzy this year.

“In addition to the thousands of people who will drive to and through Tairāwhiti Gisborne, it’s great to see that we will be flying more than 14,000 customers into the region this summer.

“Connecting friends and whānau with each other during the holiday period is an important part of what we do.

“Over the busy holiday season we suggest that everyone allow plenty of time to get to the airport, especially if you’re travelling with pets, oversized bags, or require special assistance.

“Wishing you happy holidays from all of our Air New Zealand whānau.”

Air NZ expects to fly more than one million customers domestically between December 15, 2023 and January 31, 2024.
