An aerial survey of the region's wetlands by fixed-wing aircraft will run until June.

Gisborne District Council says an aerial survey of the region’s wetlands by fixed-wing aircraft has started.

It will run until June.

The low-flying aircraft will capture images to help map wetlands and support improvements to the Te Karaka and Waipaoa flood control schemes.

“Wetlands are vital for biodiversity, water quality, and climate regulation, and this work is part of a nationwide requirement,” a council spokesman said.

“We’ll update our website as soon as the pilot confirms flight days and locations.”
