A busy hour for Gisborne firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a vehicle crash on State Highway 35 at Pouawa yesterday and an hour later attended a fire at a house in Kaiti.

The first came at 3pm when a 4x4 vehicle went off SH35 at Pouawa and rolled.

“When police, firefighters and St John ambulance crews arrived there was no one with the vehicle,” a senior firefighter said.

Police have an inquiry under way.

At 4pm, Fire and Emergency NZ sent a crew to a house in Wainui Road near Endcliffe Road.

“Some rubbish left too close to the home's fireplace caught fire and the flames spread to nearby curtains,” the senior firefighter said.

“The occupants of the house had managed to put the fire out by the time we arrived. We made sure it was out.

“No one in the house was injured in the incident but iIt illustrates the care you've got to take when leaving anything too close to a fireplace.”
