The final concert in this season’s Tiromoana summer series stars 2009 Gisborne International Music Competition’s “most promising player” recipient, violinist Tony Zhai. Joined by Auckland-based husband and wife violinist Xin (James) Jin and pianist Xing Wang the programme will feature solo piano, solo violin, violin and piano as well as
a trio.
Included in the programme is a selection from Bela Bartok’s 44 violin duos, Bach’s Sonata for solo violin in C Major and Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate’s Navarra, Op. 33.
Zhai has been involved with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s (APO) young achiever’s programme and in 2007 received a masterclass with Pamela Frank as part of the Michael Hill Violin Competition. He later completed a Bachelor of Music performance with first class honours at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney with Professor Ole Bohn. The young violinist has been part of masterclasses in Australia, France, Austria, Italy and Brazil. He is now a full time player with Orchestra Victoria in Melbourne.
Xin (James) Jin is associate principal second violinist in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the APO’s China liaisons coordinator, director of the Auckland Academy of Music and director of the APO Youth Chamber Ensemble. Since moving to New Zealand in 2014, Xing Wang has performed as a soloist with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the Manawatu Sinfonia, the NZSM Orchestra, Auckland Symphony Orchestra, and the Tawa Orchestra.
