With suitcase kick-drum stomping, stand-on-the-double bass dancing, classical acoustic guitar through a whammy pedal, and former Gisborne woman Bonnie Hurunui on vocals, White Chapel Jak is not your garden variety of a cover band.

White Chapel Jak is all about the acoustic-pop sound with funky beats.

Music is Hurunui's first passion, but her business training has helped give the band a shining future and a long songlist to choose from, which includes hits from artists ranging from Bruno Mars to Pink Floyd, from Bob Marley to Bowie and just about everything in between.

While a Gisborne Girls' High School student, Hurunui was in every high school band there was, she says.

“Music was the reason I stayed at school.”

To create White Chapel Jak, Hurunui essentially headhunted band members.

“We all blend in together,” Hurunui told the Guide in 2018.

“Because we love what we're doing, we bring energy to it. White Chapel Jak is not a job. I call it a living and people pay us to do it.”
