Saturday, October 3Trade Zone Kids Gone Fishing Competition, Watties Wharf, 9.30am–12.30pm. Registration at 9am. Bait and a limited amount of hand lines available for those who don’t have a fishing line. Great prizes, spot prizes and a sausage sizzle.

Enterprise Cars Nicks Head Charity Fishing Tournament is on at Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club. Weigh-in 3–5pm, fresh fish auction 5pm. Special licence, non-members welcome.

Bella Cajon (genre-defying, eight-piece dancefloor favourites) playing live with One Man Down and Missing Link in support, at The Dome. Doors and music from 7pm, $10 on the door.

Tuesday, October 6Poverty Bay Blues Club, the Dome, doors open 7pm, music starts 8pm, $5.

Thursday, October 8Poetry and Song Night at Smash Palace, 7pm, with special guest Vaughan Rapatahana, launching his latest poetry collection 'Atonement'.

Musica Viva Concert, piano magic inspired by Bach, played by Michael Houstoun, 7.30pm, Lawson Field Theatre, door sales adults $30, school students $10.

Friday, October 9Maths is Fun finale party, 10am, free, HB Williams Memorial Library. A celebration and certificate for everyone who attended the programme, plus a final challenge.

Snow Gala, hosted by the Gisborne Toy Library, at Mangapapa Playcentre with 5 tonnes of real snow. Tickets are $5 per child from the Gisborne Toy Library, Adair's Building, 100 Grey St on the first floor. Tickets are limited. Gisborne Toy Library is open Tuesday 10-1, Thursday 3-5 and Saturday 11-2.

Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club, Nikau Flat Hut, Wairata Valley, Waioeka Scenic Reserve (M - FE), 7.30am, $15. The walk to Nikau Flat Hut involves some stream crossings, and the track is partly unformed along the upper Waioeka River. About 7 hours there and back, weather dependent.
