■ Spirit and Tradition | Dancers of Damelahamid

The Dancers of Damelahamid are coming to Tūranganui-a-Kiwa for two special free performances of Spirit and Tradition. This is a Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival event. Spirit and Tradition celebrates the richness of Gitxsan and Cree culture — the Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Canadian Coast. Lawson Field Theatre, 10.30am and 1pm. ■ Natasha Lee + Levi James Mackey

Smash Palace, Friday, 8pm, $10. Check out two of Gisborne’s rising stars. First up, Natasha Lee with her original acoustic songs from the heart (check her out on Spotify), then Levi Mackey will have you dancing with his country rock originals and covers.

Gisborne War Memorial Theatre, 7pm, Saturday. Twelve bands to play off at the Tairāwhiti regional finals. They are: Turanga Tane Rebels; Nga Rau Mahara; Rising Revolution; The Generators; NSRB; Pray 4 Summer; Ant; Kisum; Fire Hydrant Water Hose; Dad’s Garage; CLCSl; and Eleventh Hour. ■ Te Aka Rangatahi: The Teen Vine Anime Club

Watch and discuss anime with other aficionados at Te Aka Rangatahi: The Teen Vine Anime Club for teenagers 14-18. Light refreshments will be available. HB Williams Memorial Library, Friday June 23, 3.30pm, free.

■ Tuesday Gisborne Pub Choir

Smash Palace, June 20, 7pm to 9pm. Group sings popular songs. Singing tuition provided, no prior experience needed. Learn a new song each week and sing about a dozen pop classics.

■ Seattle Tribute 2023 - Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Nirvana

■ School of Rock Auditions

■ Winnie the Pooh Plus A Midnight’s Dream

Evolution Theatre Rising Stars, 75 Disraeli St, Monday June 26 – Thursday June 29 5.30pm – 7.30pm. Winnie the Pooh (ages 6-12), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (ages 12 - 17). Support tamariki join in the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh. Then follow rangitahi as they venture into Shakespeare. Adults $10, children (17 and under) $5.

VISUAL ARTS

■ Gisborne Artists, Potters and Photographers annual exhibition

Join the Gisborne Artists’ Society, Pottery Group and Camera Club for the opening night (Friday June 23) of their annual showcase at the museum. From 5.30pm, and all artworks will be for sale, cash and eftpos, with a 10 percent discount on purchases from the exhibition for current Friends of the Museum. Exhibition runs until August 20.

■ Ka tū te Rūnanga Exhibition/Whakaaturanga - John Moetara

A mixed media offering influenced by the people, the place and the kōrero of home. John Moetara specialises in painting and is active in both Whakairo and kapa haka. A local kaiako at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, on Whirikoka campus, Moetara teaches the programme for Māori and Indigenous Arts. On display until July 30.

■ Matahīawa Exhibition

Toihoukura — School of Māori Visual Art and Design hosts the Matahīawa Exhibition, which runs until July 12. Toihoukura invites you to remember the lessons of the past and embrace the promise of the future.
