A fresh paint job has given the Unity Theatre building in Ormond Road a much needed spruce up, says Unity committee member Norman Maclean.

“It makes the building more noticeable. When people ask ‘where is Unity Theatre’ you can say ‘look for the blue building on Ormond Road. It outs our own stamp on it.”

The spruce up is the first paint job for the theatre since the company bought the building in the 1980s.

The pink colour scheme, and the familiar theatre symbol of twinned comedy and tragedy masks, based respectively on Greek muses Thalia and Melpomene, have been replaced with clean, bright lines in two tones of blue. The front facade is painted in dark blue while the sides of the building are rendered in a soft, Wedgewood blue.

“It has the effect of making the wall look longer,” says Maclean of the “lion-shaped” building.
