Right, progressive rock band Uni-Fi (pictured) are about to mark their 10-year anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than by taking the stage at Smash Palace this Saturday night? Gisborne audiences will be able to enjoy two home-grown bands on the same night, with three-piece power trio Machete also set to play at Smash Palace.

Gisborne audiences will have the chance to hear two home-grown bands play a mix of rock covers and original music when Machete and Uni-fi take to the stage at Smash Palace this Saturday.

Machete

Three-piece power trio Machete is made up of Lawrence Rangi (lead vocals and guitar), Mike Pomana (drums) and Nathan Quirk (bass guitar).

Machete was formed last year and played a gig called Floodstock earlier this year to raise money for the cyclone relief effort. They have also played at the PBC Blues Night.

For this gig they are going to be playing punk and classic rock.

The set will be made up of songs from Pantera, The Cult, The Sex Pistols, The Beatles, Offspring, Lenny Kravitz, Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore, Guns n Rose’s and. Royal Blood.

Mike Pomana is on the drums and also has a solo project called Jam Solo.

He has worked as a professional drummer based overseas in Indonesia and returned to Gisborne two years ago.

Lawrence played bass in a band called Supreme Brother Sounds and guitar in a band called Skankamelia.

Lawrence and Mike were part of a heavy metal collective called the Troops of Doom.

Nathan Quirk also plays in a band called Last Moon Ticket. This will be their first official gig as Machete, so think of it as the world premiere — Gizzy-style.

Uni-Fi

Progressive rock band Uni-Fi are about to celebrate their 10-year anniversary and have a healthy reputation around the North Island. Made up of Cory Garrett (lead vocals), Michael Shanks (guitar), Gana Goldsmith (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Genesis Burgess (drums), Uni-Fi describe their sound as technical grooves with powerful vocals and nice harmonies. They will play all originals, including some of the songs from their self-titled debut album.

“We’ll be playing a brand new song we’ve never played before, as well as all the old faithfuls,” says Cory Garrett.

“It’s always a fun night out.”

■  Smash Palace, 24 Banks Street, 9pm-11.30pm on Saturday.

Door charge $15.
