Prize-winning Australian pianist Tony Lee and bassoonist Long Nguyen will launch this season’s Tiromoana summer concert series on Sunday.

Lee is one of the most highly awarded pianists in Australia — and the first Australian musician to be invited as a soloist in residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Belgium.

Among his many achievements, he was invited to perform with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for the premier performance of Gareth Farr’s piano concerto, which he has also performed in Great Britain.

The programme includes a guest performance by bassoonist Long Nguyen who began studying bassoon as a 10 year old at the Hanoi Conservatorium of Music. He has performed with professional orchestras such as Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.

He recently premiered a piece commissioned for him by Chinese composer Gao Ping.
