Corners of the Earth: Kamchatka

Filmmakers Spencer Frost and Guy Williment and surfers Letty Mortenson and Fraser Dovell journey to Kamchatka in the far east of Russia in search of new waves along the frozen coastline. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk, the Kamchatka Peninsula has more than 150 volcanoes (29 active). The trip took two years of planning. Then, an hour before the party boarded their flight to Moscow, Russia invaded Ukraine.

The Miracle Club

Set in 1967, the film follows the story of three generations of friends (played by Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates and Agnes O’Casey) of Ballygar, a hard-knocks community in Dublin. When the chance to win a pilgrimage to Lourdes presents itself, the women seize it. But just before their trip, old friend Chrissie (Laura Linney) arrives for her mother’s funeral. The women set out on their journey, with Chrissie joining in place of her mother. The presence of Chrissie, back from a near-40-year exile in the United States, reopens old wounds. Also stars Stephen Rea.

Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) leads a research team diving into the deepest depths of the ocean. Threatened by a malevolent mining operation, they are forced into a battle for survival, pitted against colossal, prehistoric sharks and relentless environmental plunderers.

The illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Joseph Bologne rises to the heights of French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with a love affair and a falling-out with Marie Antoinette. Stars Kelvin Harrison Jr, Samara Weaving, Lucy Boynton, Minnie Driver and Marton Csokas.

Coco is the fourth Disney movie to be reimagined in te reo Māori. It is written in the dialect of Te Tairāwhiti to honour the Spanish lineage of Jose Manuel on the East Coast. Te Matatini chairman Selwyn Parata and his son Ngarimu tackled translations for it.
