A ROOM OF ONE GROUP’S OWN: A shed load of writing is stacked in Poverty Bay Pen Pushers’ latest collection, Tales from the Shed.

A ROOM OF ONE GROUP’S OWN: A shed load of writing is stacked in Poverty Bay Pen Pushers’ latest collection, Tales from the Shed.

POVERTY Bay Pen Pushers’ third anthology includes works that range from travel writing and poetry to a ghost story and beyond.

Among contributions by Elenor Gill, Michael Flaherty, Dorothy Fletcher, Claire Martinez, Barbara Berge, Dell Buscke and Joy Ashwell is Berge’s story of a hunter who revels in the freedom of magnificent stag, Martinez’s vivid snapshot of Vietnam and Flaherty’s brief memoir of his life as a child in wartime London.

The collection has been released in time for the festive season so Tales from the Shed would not be complete without a Christmas story or two. Among them is Buscke’s Fizzy Drinks and Dried Bananas, part memoir of the childhood experience of Christmas and part meditation on the celebration as deep-seated cultural constant in a rapidly changing world.

Ashwell reveals a gran’s perspective of family joy, and sherries, and ends the collection with the line “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”

Now in its 14th year, Poverty Bay Pen Pushers’ previous anthologies were Dreams are Free, and Time and Tide.
