The Garden Stage also hosts an alternative and indie lineup that focuses on up-and-coming acts High Hoops, Soaked Oats, Balu Brigada and Yukon Era.

TONIGHTIn this week’s run-up to R&V, singer-guitarist Jerseybob and his cajon-playing wife Monika bring open-tuned, folk-infused music to the Dome’s garden bar tonight at 6pm.
Fancy some Spanish infused piano instead? At 7.30pm, young Spanish pianist Oscar Gomez Villarroya’s programme at Tiromoana’s Summer Concert Series includes Cantos de Espana, and Tango in D Major from Suite Espana by 19th century pianist Isaac Albeniz and Joaquín Turina’s Danzas Gitanas II.
FRIDAYWellington-born Samoan hip-hop king, King Kapisi and Supergroove founding member Che Fu, present Project Hedlok tomorrow night at the White House from 7.30pm.
The hip-hop, reggae, dancehall, R&B and rock vocalists perform alongside Gisborne and East Coast artist Coey East, the man behind the memorable track Ride wid uss.
“Oh yaes, c’mon/ I’d like to welcome y’all/ to Gisborne city . . . (Little Miamiiii) East side up, east side Tairawhiti/ Little do they know there’s a ghetto in my city . . .”
Also performing at the gig are Tokomaru Bay musician A.Zee, Anubis who has previously mixed it up with Gisborne’s Mystchiff Maykahs, DJ Murdurah, Stryfe, Madhousx, and M.D.C..
SUNDAY, NEW YEAR’S EVEOne alternative to R&V’s big night is the New Years Reggaelution at Smash Palace. See in the New Year with Dreadicated, Subherbz, and DJ Endstar at 8pm. Tickets $15 plus booking fee from undertheradar.co.nz or $20 on the door.
Free youth festival Yolo NYE starts at the Soundshell/ Outdoor Theatre at 8pm. The lineup for the alcohol-free, no smoking, event includes Wairoa-based hip-hop duo Rugged and Wylde, Miss Pou, Tyna Keelan, Rose, Jazz Taare, DJ Murdurah and Hawke’s Bay’s DJ Clubfoot, and the Movement Dance Company.
Yolo NYE also has a 15+ VIP zone, inflatables, games, giveaways and food stalls.
A ride home is offered with a free bus service from 11.30pm. The bus stops at Kaiti Mall, Ballance St Village, Lytton West Shops and Elgin shops.
THE BEAT GOES ONThe new year has just begun, festival-goers have straggled home, the sun has come out again but the beat goes on.
Jan 5-6, Hell Smashfest VI. The two-day heavy metal, rock and punk festival at Smash Palace features 15 bands over two stages. Gisborne acts Uni-Fi, and Diekaiju will be joined by Auckland band Stormforge, Bulletbelt from Wellington, Melbourne rockers Logic Defies Logic and many more. Friday night introduces the “festival camp stage”, metal merchandise market, food and drink vendors, camp “bar”, and festival sports. Saturday features the main event and it all winds up at 11am on Sunday.
January 12, Live-on-the-Lawn. Held at Marina Park at 6pm, the outdoor summer concert series presents Friends.
January 12-13, East Coast Vibes. The much-anticipated soul, roots and reggae festival, is now a two-day event at the Soundshell/Outdoor Theatre. Tickets available from ticketspace.co.nz.
With more than 40 performances lined up a record number of acts have been signed for the 2018 edition of the music festival.
“We have reggae, roots, R&B, hip-hop, acoustics, soul, internationally-acclaimed dancers and two of the funniest comedians in the country,” says event organiser Davy Faapito.
Concert headliners Fiji, Rebel Souljahz from Hawaii and American reggae artist Spawnbreezie will join New Zealand icons Herbs and Scribe along with Chad Chambers, Tomorrow People, Sammy J, Bella Kalolo, Sid Diamond and Foundation at the festival. Tickets are available from www.ticketspace.co.nz
January 18, Singer-songwriter Ciaran McMeeken performs at the Dome, at 7pm. McMeeken joined Avalanche City and Ronan Keating for their New Zealand tours last year and more recently was on the bill as support for American singer-songwriter Andy Grammer’s Auckland show. January 19, Live-on-the-Lawn. Barleycorn bring a mixture of Celtic and folk music, and songs of the sea to their free concert at Marina Park at 6pm.
January 20, Shenandoah Davis’s show at the Dome is part of the US-based musician and songwriter’s third NZ tour which coincides with the release of her third album Souvenirs. American Songwriter calls her new album “the perfect introduction to her orchestral brand of rock-tinged indie pop and her sweeping, singular voice.” $15 presales from Aviary, undertheradar.co.nz or $20 on the door.
January 25, Rock Steady Supergroup made up of former Bad Company, and Foreigner members, with support group Brilleaux, perform at Smash Palace, 8pm. Tickets available from eventfinda or venue at 867 7769.
January 26, Live-on-the-Lawn - music and humour with Walter “the Wiz” Walsh, at Marina Park at 6pm.
January 27, Wellington based electro, soul, pop act, Nation, perform at the Dome at 8pm as part of their nationwide pop vulture tour. Described as New Zealand’s answer to Jamiroquai, the band is poised to release its EP Pop Vulture.
January 28, Smash Palace turns 28. Celebrate with IRB, Uni-Fi, The Huntaways and more at 24 Banks Street, 4pm (free).
February 2, Live-on-the-Lawn presents Gisborne Concert Band, 6pm, Marina Park.
