The Rhythm and Vines music festival has decamped but the summer beat goes on in Gisborne. The party season continues tomorrow with all-female act The Coolies who mash together dance, punk and pop in the Dome garden tomorrow at 9pm. Entry is free.

Tomorrow also marks the start of the two-day East Coast Vibes festival. Held at the Outdoor Theatre, commonly known as the Soundshell, the festival includes for the first time Julian Marley, son of reggae royalty Bob Marley, and Hawaiian-based reggae artist J Boog. Saturday gets busier with Queen Bee duo Lynette Stankovich and Wally Teua who will take easy-listening summer sounds to the White House in Peel Street on Saturday at 12.30. Entry free. At 1.30pm, Joseph Walsh, aka Jo Wa, will explore Jimi Hendrix guitar styles, the balladry of Neil Young, The Beegees, Stevie Wonder and his love of jazz and bossa nova at Wrights Vineyard and Winery, 1093 Wharerata Road. Also free entry.

“I’m a big fan of Jimi Hendrix,” says Walsh. “I like his more mystical, spritual, mellow sort of stuff.”

A Readers Digest Treasury of Best Loved Songs with sheet music led to Walsh’s interest in the Brazilian sound of bossa nova.
