Shrek the Musical's lead characters Reaf Dittmer (Lord Farquaad, left), Kelly Hogan (Fiona), Carlos Latu (Shrek) and Teddy Grant (Donkey). Gisborne Centre Stage is presenting the musical next month.

Gisborne’s Centre Stage Theatre Group is bringing the story of the loveable green ogre and his sidekick donkey to the stage this April.

The world fell in love with Shrek 25 years ago when the first movie came out, and director Danielle Siata is excited to bring the musical version to Gisborne.

“It’s a family-friendly show and also a great musical for our young cast to get their teeth into,” Siata said.

“The shows will run during the school holidays and will provide local families with a fun school holiday activity.”

Shrek the Musical is the same story as the movie, but with a lot of songs and dance numbers as well.

The musical version features many songs that were written specifically for the musical, as well as the classic I’m a Believer everyone remembers from the film.

Gisborne Centre Stage is bringing Shrek to the stage in the musical version of the hit movies. Shrek the Musical will run from April 10 to 18 at the War Memorial Theatre.

The show will have a giant dragon, three blind mice, tap-dancing rats and all the fairy tale characters that feature in the films.

Siata is thrilled with all the extra elements that are being added to the musical to bring the story of Shrek alive onstage.

“What makes Shrek the Musical particularly exciting is its appeal to younger audiences, and one of the main reasons Centre Stage Theatre Group chose to do this show is to give families a chance to attend a child-friendly musical that the whole family can enjoy.

“The talented cast features many young performers. Over half the cast are school-aged children, who bring a fresh energy to the stage.”

Shrek the Musical will run from April 10 to 18 at the War Memorial Theatre, including a matinee on Sunday, April 12.

Tickets are available from Ticketek and at the Gisborne isite.

Tickets are $25 a person for select shows. There is also a special family price.
