American Blues Review describes Australian singer-piano player Jan Preston as ‘technically strong, full of character, dripping with life” and now the blues/boogie musician and her husband will perform at the next Poverty Bay Blues Club night.
Coined Australia’s Queen of Boogie Piano by Rhythms Magazine, Preston’s music has the familiar
boogie stroll and more. Tracks like I Was Young Once from the album Play It Again Jan are accessorised with delicately jazzy guitar-work.
After studying classical piano, then working in theatre (Red Mole Troupe) and rock bands in her native New Zealand and New York, Preston had a hit, Doctor I Like Your Medicine, with her band Coup D’Etat. It stayed on the charts for four months in 1981, peaking at No. 9.
Preston and husband Mike Pullman open the Poverty Bay Blues Club night at 8pm. Local acts will follow before the boogie/blues duo take the stage again. They will be supported by a local bass player.
Preston’s CD Play It Again comes with 13, mostly original, tracks that range from boogie-woogie piano (Gold Coast Boogie, Blues and the Boogie, Pumpin Paul) to poignancy (The Sun Shines, Your Own Life), and humour (Queen of Cash, Scared of the Dark).
