DARKROOM at the Dome is a one-night only exhibition of works by Gisborne photographer Thomas Teutenberg.
Over the past year Teutenberg has stuck to self-prescribed, daily practice. Photography has to fit around his life, his routines, and his routes. His images tend to urban hardware, detritus, the overlooked.
“Objects inTeutenberg’s oeuvre are often depicted alone in curious found situations, or cobbled together in stacks,” writes Auckland-based artist Amelia Harris.
“Orange cones become their own beings, getting themselves into tricky situations (in the river), strewn on the train tracks, or encircled in a whimsical group.
“Trolleys too become wilful. They hang out alone, crowd together, or boldly go against the current of all the other trolleys. As viewers we bear witness to a vision of a different kind of place, away from the famous beaches, or the sunsets, looking more to detritus for transcendence.”
The exhibition will be at the Dome on Friday next week. A collection of Teutenberg’s black and white, and colour pictures thoughtfully collated under one cover in a compact edition called 4010 Photographic, episode one, will also be available.
