The elbow-out-the-window on-the-road track Stranger Tides opens Teia Kennedy’s debut EP of the same name. The bouncy, wind-in-your-hair song sings to the uncertainty of unknown futures — stranger tides — while the matriarchal ocean remains a constant.
Youthful anxieties about love (such as that for the ocean); finding, holding onto,
relinquishing, and substituting, make up the songs in the album.
“Excuse me old love,” sings Kennedy in the ambiguously titled song by the same name as a sweet, rolling piano accompaniment kicks in, “I’m just trying to live/ I’m trying to live without you/ I thought I loved you before/ Now I know I do.”
Inspired by an old-school vibe, the solo acoustic singer-songwriter’s lyrics are blended with simple, honest acoustic arrangements you can hear for yourself when she performs at Wrights Vineyard and Winery next week as part of her Second Wave Tour. In 2015 Kennedy won the Pacifica Beats MAINZ scholarship and having completed her musical arts degree at the Music and Audio Institute NZ she’s hitting the road again.
