Nan's 'easy as' guava sauce

POPULAR TREAT: “Nan” made this desert for her grandson’s fourth birthday, and admits she cheated and bought the meringues because she was short of time. They were “demolished”, she says. “I did see some of the adults going back for seconds.” Picture supplied

‘Nan’ says she likes recipes that are very basic, quick and easy . . . and that the aroma when simmering the guavas for this sauce is just divine.

Ingredients2 cups guava (halved — don’t forget to

snip the bottoms off)

1 cup sugar

1 lemon

MethodMix the guavas and sugar in a pan and

let stand for 1 hour to macerate.

Bring to boil in pan and simmer for 15

mins, stirring occasionally.

After five mins, add the juice of

1/2 to 1 lemon (depending on taste) — stir.

Leave to cool.

Store in fridge.

Pour sauce over meringues topped with

a mixture of cream and plain yoghurt.

(Whip 500ml cream and fold in 150g
