A production of musical rom-com Mamma Mia! set on a Greek island and based on the songs of pop group ABBA is in search of a cast. Pre-auditions for the Musical Theatre Gisborne (MTG) production, directed and choreographed by Dean McKerras, will be held on March 3 at the MTG clubrooms in Innes Street.

The plot follows Sophie Sheridan who invites three men, each one with the possibility of being her father, to her upcoming wedding. Sophie dreams of being given away by her father at her wedding, and believes that after she spends time with them she will know which is her father. The young bride-to-be’s mother runs the villa-hotel where the wedding will be held — but is unaware of her daughter’s plan.

The story is something to make a song and dance about and you could be part of the cast that does just that when the show opens in July. The pre-audition next month will be a chance to meet McKerras, musical director Amanda Maclean and the production team. Along with a Q&A session, McKerras will also hold a dance workshop of the choreography to be used at auditions. Wear clothing you can move in and take your water bottle.

Prospective cast members for the vivacious musical comedy about mothers, daughters, old friends, and new family have an opportunity to learn about this vibrant and energetic show ahead of auditions on April 13th. Take a look at the video at www.tinyurl.com/yxna4gby in which McKerras demonstrates the choreography for the song Mamma Mia.

The video was shot at Theatre Whakatane. MTG has been in talks with Theatre Whakatane Inc and Musikmakers Hamilton and the three- theatre consortium is building a modular set that will be transported by container to Gisborne. All three theatres are staging Mamma Mia! at different times of the year. They will also share costumes, props and ideas.

The Mamma Mia! pre-audition meeting and workshop for Musical Theatre Gisborne’s production of Mamma Mia! will be held at Musical Theatre Gisborne, 99 Innes Street, 5-6pm on Sunday, March 3.
