Museum takeover

Gisborne Artists' Society are taking over a gallery at Tairawhiti Museum tomorrow for the opening of their annual exhibition.

Over 100 pieces of art were received from members last weekend.

Artist and painting curator Richard Rogers then had his work cut out when it came to choosing the art to appear on the museum walls.

A total of 107 paintings, prints, drawings and mixed media works came into the society's headquarters, Lysnar House.

Members assisting were hard pressed to find space for all of them, said Gisborne Artists' Society president Norman Maclean.

The task of selecting occupied Mr Rogers for over two hours last Sunday, and he said it was a more exacting process than many people realise.

Consideration has to be given to providing a completely representative range while keeping in mind the space available and the need to ensure that when a large number of big paintings appear, they do not reduce space for smaller works of high merit.

Many works unselected are well worth displaying and all of them are now available for collection from the storage cupboards at Lysnar House.

The exhibition will be opened by Margaret Hansen, who was the selector for last year's show.

The society anticipates a large turnout tomorrow and welcomes new members who will find information brochures available at the gallery.
