Black-singleted Wal’s sidekick Dog, in Murray Ball’s popular cartoon strip Footrot Flats, is played by Mathew Hatten in the upcoming Musical Theatre Gisborne production of Footrot Flats, the musical.

Town versus country is at the heart of Footrot Flats, the musical, that Musical Theatre Gisborne’s performers will trot, stalk, skitter and dance in when the family-friendly comedy opens at the War Memorial Theatre next month.

Director Teresa Campbell has mustered her actors and cast Walter Walsh as black-singleted Wal whose eyelash-batting girlfriend Cheeky Hobson, played by Danielle Siata, tries to lure Wal from the farm and into the city. Then there is the possibility the farm will be sold.

The comic heart of the farm, and Wal’s best mate, Dog, played by Mathew Hatten, is sure to have something to thought-bubble out loud about that.

The cast also includes Liz Cutts as Dog’s fertile sweetheart Jess, Roy Neumegen as snaggle-toothed mongrel Major, Peter Grealish as wildlife lover Cooch and Heather Derby as the slightly over-bearing Aunt Dolly, owner of overweight corgi Prince Charles played by Andrew Stevens.

Callum McConnochie is the fly-screen shredding, eel jagging, wild tomcat Horse while pig-tailed larrikin Pongo is played by Sarah Robinson. Mary Cowper has taken on the part of the intimidating sow Dolores.
