Metal-head musicians from around the country are preparing to crash into Smash with the sound of heavyweight acts Metallica, Pantera, and Megadeth.

Gisborne man Vincent Hogan’s band Harbinger will perform a Metallica tribute; Meniak are taking on Pantera while Demon fetal harvest will raise up Megadeth.

The bands’ musicians are scattered like beast seed around New Zealand, says Hogan. He might not have actually said beast seed; just that the musos get together before a gig to sacrifice a black rooster and practice hard-out. Several of them are in various bands, and their names are legion for they are many.

To the untrained eye and ear, metal musicians are a bunch of blokes in black T-shirts banging their hair against an invisible wall — but there is much more to it than that, says Hogan.

Metallica and Megadeath make an enormous sound but they are not extreme and there is no screaming. Pantera is a little heavier and the uninitiated will still enjoy it if they hear it on the stereo.

“Metal is like any other music. It’s very diverse. I like the technicality in it and there are a lot of themes. It tends to be fairly melancholy — anti-war stuff and stuff about the world. It often doesn’t pull any punches and will delve into things people don’t talk about.

“Don’t be deterred if you haven’t been to a metal show before. It’s just a bunch of friendly guys having fun.”

Autumn Awakening, Smash Palace, Saturday, 9pm, $15+bf at trybooking.com or $20 door sales.
