BOTTLED OCEAN: As part of the Tairawhiti Arts Festival artist George Nuku will build in the War Memorial Theatre foyer an installation called Manawa Moana — but he needs your help. Picture supplied
Be part of artist George Nuku’s creation in the War Memorial Theatre foyer of Manawa Moana, an installation created from fizzy drink plastic bottles. The massive artwork is one of many events to be held during the Tairawhiti Arts Festival next month.
To build his installation Nuku needs your help,
and your plastic bottles — tonnes of plastic bottles.
In a world where plastic waste is a global concern, Nuku’s installation challenges us to look at plastic in a new light — practical, harmful and beautiful. Manawa Moana will involve the participation of people of all ages and backgrounds to contribute to the sourcing of used plastic bottles and the creation of the supersized artwork.
The translucent artwork will be installed in the War Memorial Theatre from October 4-20.
Plastic bottle drop zones can be found at the HB Williams Memorial Library, Turanga Ararau, Kaiti School, Smash Palace and Raglan Roast.
