Bright colours and fun are key to Annabel Dowding’s artwork on show at Muirs Bookshop Cafe.
Imagery draws largely from nature and includes stylised birds, trees, dogs and flower explosions. Groovie Baby (pictured) is pure psychedelic exuberance.
“I do like bold and bright colours,” says Dowding.“I’m inspired by things I
see around the place, in the natural world. I like to experiment and give things a go. I keep pushing myself to work in a broad range.”
Her parents and teachers have always encouraged her to pursue her passion for art and she is inspired by early modernists such as Picasso and Monet, she says.
“I like to liven up spaces. I love painting and I love painting happy, bright pictures.” Dowding studied art at Otago Polytechnic for three years. The experience was fantastic, she says. “Then I got a bit scared. Scared about it coming to an end. I thought I’d be a struggling gypsy.”
