The Danberrys: Tennessee bluegrass duo The Danberrys with Vanessa McGowan of Tattletale Saints on upright bass perform at the EastEnd Cafe in Wairoa on Thursday December 21 (7pm). Tickets $20. They perform again the following night at Tokomaru Bay’s Te Puka Tavern at 8pm. Free admission.

Rhythm and Vines: Three-day music festival featuring more than 100 bands, DJs and comedians. Headliners include Schoolboy Q, 2ManyDJ’s, David Dallas and P-Money. December 29-31, (from 2pm). Waiohika Estate.

Human Traces: Kiwi filmmaker Nic Gorman’s feature debut is a thriller set against the rugged backdrop of the Canterbury coast where husband-and-wife scientist team Sarah and Glenn have been posted. When a mysterious stranger named Pete arrives, deception begins to disrupt the order.

Menashe: Menashe, a kind, hapless grocery store clerk, struggles to make ends meet and responsibly parent his young son, Rieven, following his wife Leah’s death.

Borg vs McEnroe: Wimbledon, 1980. The rainiest summer in decades. The world is waiting to see the number one tennis player in the world, Björn Borg, claim his fifth Wimbledon title. But few know of the drama behind the scenes: at only 24, Borg is close to the end — run-down, worn out and ridden with anxiety. Kedi: Acclaimed Turkish documentary film about the stray cats of Istanbul. Although thousands of street cats live in Istanbul, the film focuses on seven. Kedi is an examination of one of our oldest animal companions, and the ways they enrich our lives.

Waru: Following the death of a child, eight Maori women are confronted by guilt, pride and defeat but will ultimately risk for the greater good of their community. Eight female Maori directors have each contributed a 10 minute vignette, presented as a continuous shot in real time, that unfolds around the tangi (funeral) of a small boy (Waru) who died at the hands of his caregiver. The vignettes are all subtly interlinked.
